Laura Mays
'Fluvial'

A tribute to the dwindling Northern California redwoods, this cabinet is crafted from a salvaged ‘sinker’ (trees that fell into rivers during deforestation in the 1800s), its watery origin referenced by dripping forms reminiscent of tears. Its anthropomorphic proportions are a reminder of the impact human hubris has on the natural world, gently asking us to ameliorate extractive behaviours.

Originally trained as an architect, Laura Mays was later drawn to woodworking. She is currently Director of The Krenov School in Fort Bragg, overseeing a woodworking programme that focuses on craft and personal expression. Her work is featured in the collection of the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin.

"It is a phenomenal piece of furniture making. The craftsmanship is exquisite. It’s made of California redwood, so it has this incredible sense of place."
