Inspired by a Song dynasty painting, the artist brings a sense of multi-dimensionality to the mise-en-scène by resuscitating the lost art of Dragon Scale Binding. Each segment expands into a mesmerising picture, speaking to predominant themes in Chinese culture. Rekindling elements of the past, this work encourages viewers to contemplate what is not yet lost.

Credited with resurrecting the ancient craft of Dragon Scale Binding, Xiaodong Zhang makes handmade books and paper artworks. Recent solo exhibitions include the Oriental Art Center at the 2019 Venice Biennale. He has been part of group shows at Yue Art Museum and the 6th CODEX Book Fair and Symposium.
