Rei Chikaoka
'Release Clear #3'

Evoking the forces underlying the physical world, this sculpture crystallises fleeting moments in time. Using innovative techniques, the artist winds glass ribbons together, forming a tube accentuated by brass pins, with glass particles sandwiched between soft ceramic fibres that allow manipulation before firing the piece in the kiln—an object riven with movement, tension, and imminent release.

Glass and brass

After studying Interior Design, Rei Chikaoka became fascinated by glass, receiving an MA and a PhD from the Tokyo University of the Arts. Recognised globally in this field, he has won several awards, such as the Japanese Glass Art Award, Tokyo and the Stanislav Libensky Award, Prague.

"Chikaoka plays with the very particular material properties of glass: its lightness, its transparency, as well as the transition it makes between liquid and solid."
