Yeunhee Ryu
'BAGUNI'

Crafted from copper, the sophistry of this lidded box challenges perceptions of traditional Korean basketry. The seemingly rough patina gradually reveals an uneven sense of warmth and natural beauty, while the soft curves, free shapes, and organic textures serve to transcend the original metal’s cold essence, underlining the artist’s belief that used items resonate with a deeper sense of soul.

Working almost exclusively with metal, Yeunhee Ryu’s practice merges traditional Korean aesthetics shaped by childhood experiences exploring Changgyeong Palace. She has presented several prominent solo exhibitions in Korea and Japan and formed part of a group show at the Korean Craft Museum, Cheongju.

"The piece (...) is unique because one cannot tell what the material really is."
